Tests have always been a crucial part of any education system as it determines the ability of a student and based on that marks her category in the group of intelligent, average, and below average students. In the US, standardized tests have a crucial role to play and are associated with the educational system since the middle of the 18th century and still are a very important part of the US education system.

Many international students following the American Education System often get confused about the concept and different types of standardized tests. Keeping this cloud of confusion into consideration, we are throwing some light on the standardized tests and its different types to make people get familiar with it.

What are Standardized Tests?

A standardized test is basically an examination that is managed in a standardized manner. Generally, there are two types of standardized tests that are conducted in the US, one is the aptitude test and the second is the achievement tests.

The standardized tests are conducted to predict about the intellect of a student and it further tells that how well a student will perform in the educational setting exams. The most common standardized tests are SAT- I and the ACT. Both these tests are conducted to foretell how well a high school student is likely to perform in the college.

The standardized achievement tests conducted where the scores are evaluated when citizens and school board members are relying on the school’s effectiveness. Presently, there are 5 different types of achievement tests that are conducted in the US and are:

  • Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills
  • Iowa Test of Basic Skills
  • California Achievement Tests
  • Metropolitan Achievement Tests
  • Stanford Achievement Tests

Mission of the Standardized Tests

The mission of this test is to determine the ability of an international students and this is done after determining a few criteria like if his/her English skills are good enough to complete their academic program. Some schools also emphasize more on the tests scores. But, many times, a few factors complicate the interpretation of the test score for international students.

The levels of the skills may differ depending on the department the students are opting. Universities often separate the factors of the test score depending on the choice of the subjects. Like if a student is opting for the Mathematics, then the score of English may be negated.

Many universities may look for English from different aspects like Listening, speaking, writing, and grammar.

There are various types conducted for the undergraduate and post graduate students and some of them are:

For Undergraduate

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  • Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT)
  • America College Testing (ACT)

For Graduate

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  • Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
  • Law School Admission Testing Program (LSAT) (for Law students)
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
  • Dental Admission Testing Program (DAT) (for dentist)
  • Optometry Admission Testing Program (OAT)
  • Medical College Admission Test (DAT) (for medical schools)
